Memorial Day, 2009

Some of the other people whom we'd liberated from an oppressive dictatorship as well as from their families...

So, when will you go to the funeral of one of our war dead, Mr. President?

My ex-husband has been out of the Army since 1997. He was called back to service and will be leaving for Baghdad this week... my 20 and 17 year old are beside themselves with worry yet keeping a stiff upper lip... He is still my friend I worry too. I wish more people were paying attention - its has put Memorial Day into perspective much like these photos. Thank you...

You're welcome and thank you, too, for being so strong for your family. I hope your husband comes home safe and sound before you know it.

Oops. Didn't notice the "ex". It's been a harrowing two days. I'm about to close out a 23 hour stretch at work that started at 8 yesterday morning.

These are the pictures we should have been seeing since Day 1 of the Iraqi "occupation". Perhaps if that had happened, this filthy war would be over by now. These wordless depictions break my heart. Happy? Memorial Day to all who served, and the families left behind.

We buried my WWII vet father on the 22nd. These pictures reminded me of the kindness and honor that the Army personnel showed my family when the folded and presented the flag to my Mother. This courtesy should be bestowed on the living vets by all Americans, not just the recently departed.

Not to detract from your post, but the third photo down... a T-shirt at a funeral?!? Granted, it's a black, formal morning T-shirt, but still...

How about showing a little respect there, guy?

A folded piece of cloth, a flowery speech and a parade is a poor exchange for a loved one's life.

God bless our military. My Grandpa served in the Marine Corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I highly respect and honor every one of our soldiers, alive or fallen.
