Please Help Haiti

Except for a 19 year-long occupation, we've studiously ignored Haiti. We've strenuously turned a blind eye to their neverending poverty, have impassively watched dictatorships plunder the island of its natural resources and no matter which political party is in charge, Haiti just never seems to be even at the bottom of our list of priorities while we continue bloating Mideast nations through oil imports and sending $3 billion annually so Israel can continue committing its terrorist acts.

However, we finally need to start focusing on Haiti's plight now. Yesterday, a 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti about 10 miles southwest of the capital, Port-au-Prince. It was the deadliest earthquake to hit the poorest nation in the western hemisphere in 200 years. It destroyed many of the homes of the 1.8 million inhabitants in the area as well as the National Palace and the UN peacekeeping HQ. Thankfully, the main airport in the capital is still operational and planes filled with emergency personnel and relief supplies have begun flooding in.

In fact, the international response, thankfully, has been swift, although I imagine not swift enough for the Haitians who are stuck under the rubble or are trying to help rescue loved ones or are trying to find their way to a safe shelter before the aftershock. Even as I write this, President Barack Obama is now making a statement outlining our own official humanitarian efforts. What follows below is just a partial list of charities that have already jumped in with an impressive international rescue effort:

* The Red Cross has directed $200,000 for immediate assistance.

* AmeriCares has pledged to send staff and $5 million in relief aid.

* Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres will be deploying additional staff to help at severely damaged medical facilities.

* UNICEF will provide supplies to allow access to adequate sanitation, safe water and basic health care. Their phone is 1-800-4UNICEF.

* The Inter-American Development Bank, a Washington-based agency that focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean, will provide $200, 000 in immediate aid for food, water, medicine and temporary shelter.

* Venezuela plans to send food, medicine, water and 50 rescue workers.

* Mexico has pledged to send doctors, search and rescue dogs and infrastructure damage experts.

* Italy is sending a field hospital and emergency medical personnel.

* France is sending 65 clearing specialists, rescue dogs and a team of medical personnel.

Doctors Without Borders needs help not just for the Haitians but themselves. Their own buildings have been devastated by the earthquake. makes it wicked easy to donate $5. Just text "Yele" to 501501. This is done through Wyclef Jean's organization Yele Haiti so I know it's legit.

Partners in Health (PIH) is also looking for help, as is Mercy Corps. Their toll-free number is 1-888-256-1900.

You can also donate to DirectRelief online through this secure server.

Oxfam America also provides a secured server if you wish to donate to them.

International Medical Corps is also putting together a response effort to help the victims.

Here's the link to Save the Children's website.

This is the official Facebook page for the relief efforts.

Just remember, every little bit you can do helps. For now, it's still a rescue effort but the longer time passes, the more likely it will become a recovery effort.

I read that Israel was sending rescue teams to Haiti so I googled "Arab rescue teams in Haiti" and came up with nothing, except your blog. You wrote that we needed to help Haiti instead of sending money to fund Israeli terrorist acts.

So maybe Israel could do better, but with all it's oil money, why has the Arab world done nothing while the "terrorist" Israelis send help right away?

If any of us were judged solely on the basis of our misdeeds, the world would have ended long ago. Let's take a break from criticizing Israel for a moment and praise her for the good she does in the world. And lets also hear what the Arabs are doing to make the world a better place.

I'm sure the victims being rescued by Israelis wouldn't share that sentiment.

Israeli rescue teams depart for Haiti

Israel on Wednesday dispatched a large delegation of rescue workers to the Republic of Haiti to aid in the aftermath of the massive 7.0 earthquake that rocked the Caribbean nation a day earlier.

Thousands are believed to have died in the earthquake, and many buildings were destroyed, possibly trapping hundreds of live victims.

The Israeli team includes many engineers, medical workers and rescue experts from the IDF Home Front Command who have experience saving victims from toppled buildings.

Most notably, the Home Front Command Search and Rescue team played a major role in the aftermath of the 1999 earthquake that devastated western Turkey. The Israeli team managed to save 12 people from the rubble and the Israeli field hospital treated thousands of people.

In 1998, the same team was dispatched to Nairobi, Kenya after a terrorist bomb leveled the US embassy there. The team found and saved three victims from the ruined building.

Yes, that's right, the Zionist, US funded relief agency that is on the ground in Hait right fucking now, unlike anything coming from the Arab world silent response seems to be "Fuck Haiti"

So there, J-Pork, you Jew hating bastard.

Typical right wing response. I choose not to debate the difference between anti-Zionism and anti-semitism with those who are too willfully ignorant to see the difference.

I don't give a fuck about Israel's religion. I do, however, care about how they've been bullying the Middle East (and us) while grabbing 3 billion of our taxpayer dollars every year.

It's notable that you right wingers seem to have more of a vested interest in sticking up for Israel than Haiti.

How does taking a shit on Israel help Haiti? It doesn't, you fucking BONEHEAD.

Only a bonehead would ignore the complete and utter hypocrisy involved in a country going halfway across the world to rescue people buried under rubble when they turn Palestinian homes right next door into rubble on an almost daily basis.

And only the most incredible narcissists would congratulate themselves for their efforts at such a time of need... This is not about your petty little tit for tat- grow the fuck up!

Maybe it's not about what Israel does, but what the Arab world doesn't do. In this case, while so many countries (including Israel) are rushing to help, there has been no response from any Muslim country.

And even if you hate what Israel does in its own neighborhood, why can't you at least acknowledge that it does something good anywhere? Shouldn't we be looking for redeeming qualities as well as things to condemn?

At January 14, 2010 at 1:05 PM, Blogger jurassicpork said...

Maybe it's not about what Israel does, but what the Arab world doesn't do.

No it isn't. It's about Haiti. Why are you idiotic right wingers so much more ready to help out Israel than Haiti? No matter what Israel does, it doesn't wipe the slate clean. A little over a year ago, they were killing aid workers in Palestine while killing almost 1000 Palestinians.

What you're talking about here is a little PR.

At January 14, 2010 at 2:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You just can't do it, can you? Just try it. Try saying: "Israel did something good for some other people when it didn't have to."

We send billions to Egypt also, but as of now, Egypt hasn't sent a team to Haiti. Why not?

And I'm no sort of right-winger, either. I voted for Obama, was glad to do it and I also condemn many of Israel's actions. And if Egypt, Syria, Iran or even Hamas did anything for anyone but themselves, I'd feel morally obliged to acknowledge the fact. I'd love to do that right now regarding the Haitian disaster, but you see J-Pork, they haven't done anything. I think they, like Israel and the U.S. and everybody else with a beating heart should do something. Like maybe put aside their own genocidal hatred of Israel and the Jewish people for a few days and get their hands dirty lifting rubble off a dying Haitian child. Wouldn't that aid the cause of peace and understanding? Wouldn't you admitting that Israel is a nation with a conscience and the courage to act on it also aid that cause? You can go right back to criticizing as soon as your done.

At January 14, 2010 at 4:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And another thing--if you can agree that the value of human life is the same regardless of ethnicity or national origin, shouldn't we judge nations by the number of people they oppress and kill, rather than their ethic identity? As a classical liberal, I believe the life of an Arab is worth exactly the same as that of a Jew. From that, I can say that if an Arab nation kills more Arabs then a Jewish nation, the greater wrong has been done by the Arab nation. So, how many Arabs have been killed by other Arabs? Have the Israelis killed more or less?

Also, as a liberal, I believe that women have the same human rights in all countries. Have women been more oppressed in Arab countries than in Israel?

Again as a liberal, I believe in a free press. Are voices of dissent more often silenced in Arab countries than they are in Israel?

These statements in no way indicate a belief that Israel should be given a pass for its misdeeds because of the good it does in the world, including the good it is now doing in Haiti. If you say that again, I will again call you a bonehead.

It seems as though you are holding Israel to a higher moral standard than its neighbors. Well, they are trying to meet that standard and still survive. And despite the challenge involved, Israel still has time, money and desire to help Haiti.

Would it be so wrong for Hamas to divert funds away from the construction of even one rocket and instead sent that money to Haiti? If you can get them to do that, I will personally reimburse them for the expense. Good luck with that. How many Palestinians could Israel have murdered with the resources they are instead sending to Haiti?

Could Iran spend even a small portion of its budget for fissile materials on a care package for Haiti? I think they could, but I don't know why they don't I have my suspicions, but as a liberal I want to give them every benefit of the doubt. Got any theories?

And if you're not a right winger, you probably oppose nuclear power. Do you condemn Iran for enriching uranium? Shouldn't you?

And finally, I would really like you to offer a suggestion for Israel to follow. Should it simply dry up and go away, or should it tolerate a regime dedicated to its destruction to exist within striking range of its major population centers? What's your solution?

By the way, exactly what are you doing for Haiti, and in what way does it exceed the efforts of the Israeli team now on the ground in Port au Prince?

Hi there

there's an earthquake in haiti, and some racists use it to spur hatred against arabs... my oh my. i'm an arab who is praying for haitians and donating money. and i also have people in my family who spoke up against hitler, hid jews and were prosecuted who would be raging now against those who spread hatred against arabs here.

Israel is sending people to haiti because 12 Israelis are missing. OK. They are helping their own people. Last time I checked, they only granted about 100 Sudanese refugees asylum and then sent the rest back, even though they knew they would be killed. How many Sudanese refugees "Arabic" countries have? at least hundreds of thousands. So if Haiti was in the Middle East, chances are, they wouldn't be helped mostly by Israel now.

Also, Anonymous, it's quite funny that you would put Arab in a search engine. first of all, arabic things are usually in arabic on the internet and also, "arab" is like saying "white" or "black" or "semite" you can't search like that. it's not only racist, it's stupid.

oh, yeah, and i don't have time to read all the badly informed posts here by people who have never been to the middle east, or only one part of it (i have been to both) but WOMEN are respected much more in some arabic countries than in european ones, and even in israel, where they have to go to the army. i am sick of hearing these things, when i have lived in an arabic country with no problems, and have been sexually harassed in the so called "free" world.

Women have always been suppressed throughout the world, but it has NOTHING to do with "arabs", so please please please don't talk about things you know nothing about. the talibans are not even arabic or muslims, and the only reason they are there is because they were supported by the US to fight against russia. i could tell you hundreds of more facts you don't know, but why don't you go and read and learn some things. true, you won't find the truth in most medias, but there are good books and there are facts, but when you post with a preconceived notion, then what's the point.

israel actually sentenced someone for TREASON for changing from judaism to christianity, but i'm sure you never heard of it. nor have you heard of the weapons they have that could destroy every country around them (problem of course being that they would be in a nuclear dump then, too). i am not a supporter of iran, but you must be kidding me, if, after iraq being attacked and taken over, and with israel being in proximity, you blame them for wanting to have weapons to defend themselves. you tell me that if you were surrounded by people who had guns, and they already shot people next to you, that you would not pick up a gun yourself?

and you pretend to be objective?? you would never ask israel not to have any weapons if they were in that situation, which proves that you are in no way objective. but you think you are, which is really sad.

i feel sorry for all you racists. you remind me of WW2.

If you hadn't mixed up Haiti and the Middle East conflict in your original post, you'd be just another ineffectual hand-wringer.
You might have at least condemned corrupt Haitian politicos who have managed to absorb millions in foreign aid without installing any rebar in the the building which collapsed, but no! You give them a pass. Well, fine, but looks to me like you brung this shit on yourself, bone head.

But guess what? Qatar sent some food. Found that buried in an Al Jezeera video clip. So at least one Arab country has stepped up, and unlike the other posters on this blog, I'm capable of recognizing the efforts of everyone who wants to help.

Now back to your regular program. My work here is done.
