Workhouses, Are They Still in Operation?
(Tip o' the tinfoil hat to Constant Reader, CC.)
Figures it would be Republican scum who want to weaken child labor laws.
20th and 21st century Republicans are like something out of a Dickens
novel, so many Fagins, Scrooges and Uriah Heeps come to life in the
Madame Tussaud's waxworks of Capitol Hill.
Remember
when Mike Lee was first elected to the Senate? Literally a week and a
half after he got sworn in, he was already railing that child labor
laws were "unconstitutional."
Not some. All of them.
10 months later on the campaign trial in 2011, Newt Gingrich, a guy whose name really does sound as if it came out of a Dickens novel, said he wanted children to pay for their education by working as janitors.
The first child labor laws in this country were enacted right here in Massachusetts in 1836 because of the abuses in the mills. Meaning that Republican scum want to catapult us practically back to the 18th century.
This
only serves to prove what I've been saying for years- Fighting and
winning rights is always half the battle won. The other half is in keeping
those rights. Because whether we're talking weeks, months, years,
decades or even centuries, look for right wing scum to try to take away
those hard-won rights regardless of how unassailable or necessary those
rights may be. That includes minorities having the right to vote, women
having the right to vote or children having the right to an education.
It's all on the chopping block to Republicans who have long since sold themselves on the auction block.
