Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss, Only Worse
“The thing about Donald Trump is that he lacks the character and the moral center we desperately need again in the White House.”
“I am afraid he would break more things than he fixes. He is a hot head
by nature, and that is a dangerous trait to have in a Commander in
Chief.”
You would think those comments would've come from a Republican Never Trumper or a Democrat, someone with at least a bit of sense in their head. One would assume, for instance. that it was uttered by the late Senator John McCain or Rick Wilson or William Kristol. But you'd be wrong. They were actually said by Speaker Mike Johnson in 2015 while he was still a Louisiana state lawmaker.
And yet, two weeks ago, right after he had the Speaker's gavel screwed into his little fist, Mike Johnson did the obligatory ring kissing ceremony at Mar Iago. As far as the wet log of the Biden impeachment was concerned, Johnson had actually been one the voices closest to reason by saying there wasn't enough evidence for one.
After he came back from Palm Beach, it was an entirely different story.
This makes Mike Johnson nothing more or less than a servile little lickspittle in the mold of Kevin McCarthy, who'd infamously made his own little side trip to Mar a Lago to kiss the ring and put his lips on God knows what else. That was on January 28, 2021, just weeks after he laid the blame for January 6th at Trump's doorstep.
That was about as far as McCarthy got to showing any backbone. In fact, according to Liz Cheney, he was even threatening to primary freshman Republican lawmakers if they didn't fall in line behind Trump and challenge the Electoral College count. But for years, we all had McCarthy perfectly pegged- That he was a spineless little rat fucker who did anything in the name of survival and career interests.
Mike Johnson is infinitely more dangerous because, like most evangelicals, he's a True Believer.
Johnson had promised to release all 44,000 hours of Capitol footage from 1/6/21, not to stovepipe it straight to Tucker Carlson like his predecessor. The problem with that is that Johnson is playing the old bait and switch game and has thus far released just 90 hours of footage. So, what's the delay?
Johnson wants to blur the faces of the people on the security footage so they can't be arrested by the FBI and suffer "retaliation". Yes, you read that right. Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, is actively and openly running cover for the rioters and saying flat out that he's keeping the Justice Department from doing its job.
The 2020 election was over three years ago, the riots nearly that long ago. And, like Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Matt Gaetz and several others, Mike Johnson is still defending the people who tried to sack the Capitol and is almost comically trying to hide their identities even after all these years.
Johnson, don't forget, is one of the many, many Republican congressmen who voted against certifying the election results even after the riot.
So, Johnson scuttling to Mar a Lago as soon as he became Speaker to get his marching orders seems par for the course for another lickspittle, spineless Republican controlled by Trump. Trump may not control the House (otherwise Jim Jordan would've been elected Speaker instead of Johnson) but he certainly still has a solid grip on Republican House leadership from Johnson all the way down to Stefanik.
And that should worry all of us.
