Gimme a "D"! Gimme a "U"! Gimme an "H"!
What's that spell?
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard since David Brooks insisted a couple of years ago that Reagan didn’t use race in his campaign kickoff in Philadelphia, MS in 1980. Republicans actually think we’re stupid enough to believe the meme that they weren’t using race as a wedge at all and, like the Nazis with their Enigma code during WW II, they actually think their dog whistle racism is understood only by like-minded people and impenetrable and impervious to decoding by the rest of us. "States' rights", my rosy, red Irish ass.
And it’s just as obvious that the GOP, understandably very thin-skinned about being labeled as racists (while making not the slightest attempt at racial inclusion), knows that if they fire Steele or have him ousted in a special election, their chairman will be the first to pull the race card, no matter how legitimate their reasons for having him ousted.
Steele’s skin color is the only thing keeping him in the chairman’s seat, plain and simple, and they both know it. It doesn’t matter how often he embarrasses them or that he’s burning through money faster than Heath Ledger’s Joker by allowing his underlings to go to lesbian bondage clubs. If he gets shitcanned for any reason, it’ll automatically be about race. And this admission, that the GOP has been using race in their campaign strategy for 40 years, is his way of serving them notice: Fire me, I’ll pull the race card and torch all your ambitions for this year.
