The Apostates- Don't Believe Them
Right wing journalist Jennifer Rubin's been on the warpath lately, writing several articles a day slamming her fellow Republicans left and right. But I'll always view her Never Trumper stance with a lot more than mere suspicion. In fact, I still look at her and her fellow apostates such as George Will, William Kristol and Rick Wilson as useful idiots for the moment. (The National Respew took her to task for her "Trump obsession" two years ago.)
But these people helped bring the Republican Party we see today into being and helped give them cachet and gravitas when in reality they deserved none of it. Trump brought relatively few elected Republicans into DC with him. The barnacles that have fastened themselves to Trump's listing ship of state had been in the Capitol for years if not decades. Far from "draining the swamp", Trump merely repurposed the existing alligators spoiling for a fight after eight years of the black guy.
Rubin and her ilk had already given the usual suspects credibility they
didn't deserve after Bush let us get bombed by our own jetliners four
times on 9/11 then atttacked two Muslim nations innocent of any
involvement in it. And before and after we went to war, people such as
Rubin, Krauthammer, Will, Tom Friedman and virtually every fucking talking
head on Fox serenaded the right wing while they murdered over a million
innocents, squandered trillions in treasure, got over 6500 of our troops
and contractors killed, damaged our standing in the Middle East and
created the rise of first al Qaeda then ISIS.
They may seem to make sense now because they're finally seeing and can no longer ignore a greater evil being unleashed than we even saw under Bush II (which is saying a helluva lot). But they won't turn into liberals anytime soon or ever. They will never even admit that the liberals were right even when we clearly saw the past danger under Bush and the current one under Trump.
To listen to the "sensible" right wing media, they and they alone, not liberals, not only discovered the evil in our midst, they're still the only ones that can see and appraise it as if they alone have Rowdy Roddy Piper's magic sunglasses.
And after Trump is finally dislodged from this government like a massive greasy hairball clogging a sink drain, they'll go back to their old ways and cheering on the good old Republican establishment that stands for expensive, neverending ruinous wars, ruinous tax cuts, "religious liberty" and modestly racist "states' rights" and against gay rights, women's rights, abortion and unions.
They'll creep back into the fold like 14 year-olds climbing back in through their bedroom windows in the dead of night without waking up their parents after realizing to their horror that running away wasn't such a hot idea, after all.
